Half a bedroom
An ad came on the Birmingham site a few days ago advertising a 1/2 bedroom flat for rent. This seemed to me a fitting way to sum up the current accommodation situation in many areas, with property prices rising so high that there is now a market for half rooms. Maybe they could be like shared university rooms, though I prefer the image of a bedroom which has crumbled half away, leaving what’s left open to the elements and looking like a monastery after a visit from Henry VIII. As someone I work with pointed out, you wouldn’t want to be getting up in the middle of the night, half asleep and busting for a pee. Weeeeeee splat.
Sure some party-pooper will point out that this is a flat with either 1 or 2 bedrooms, but I’d still be highly suspicious of it. How can you not be clear-cut on the existence of a room in your property? “Well there’s definitely one bedroom in my flat, and there could be a second one, but heck, you know, I just can’t be sure.” Or was the poster of the ad engaged in an ongoing battle in their head over whether the 3’x3’ cupboard could legitimately be counted as a bedroom? I suppose a moses basket could fit in there, or a person huddled on the floor in the foetal position, or maybe someone hanging upside down from a bar attached to the ceiling. I wonder how many responses the ad gets, and from what kind of people.
